The “Big Gun” Mountain in Kerry
Climbing the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks there are many beautiful peaks but the “Big Gun” stands out for its unique position between the Grotto on Cruach Mhor and Cnoc na Peiste. These are among the highest peaks in Ireland, looking across the Hags Glen you can see Carrauntoohil the highest in Ireland and Beenkeragh the second highest in the Reeks.
The “Big Gun” may be the ninth highest peak in Ireland but this peak is not for the fainthearted, it is a very exposed ridge leading to it and leaving it which ever side you approach it. It is not for climbers with average experience and should be avoided in bad weather when exposed to wind, rain and snow, it can also be very slippery in bad conditions. It is best climbed in fine weather and with a local Guide.
