Valentia Car ferry

Valentia Island

Valentia Island is a hidden secret in the Kingdom of Kerry, I retraced some steps enjoyed as a kid on Valentia. My Mother was from the Island, so I brought my Kids on a walk down memory lane and found a great day out on Valentia Island.

We started on the Car ferry, its a nice touch and gives a feeling of Island life, they will give you a map of the Island which is very usefull. Arriving in Knightstown we took a walk on the new Boat Moorings, you can see Cahersiveen and the Lighthouse on Valentia. We went for a drink in the Royal Hotel, my Mothers Mother was the Manageress and my Fathers Mother Owned it. There is lots of history attached to the Hotel. The kids loved the pool table here and after we took a walk around the Village, there is a very interesting Art Gallery. Before we left we brought the Kids to the Coffee Dock for Hot Chocolates, they were fabulous according to the Kids, so was the coffee.

St. Johns Church Valentia
Saint John's Church Valentia

We found an old Church Organ in Saint John's Church and beautiful grounds, next we went to see the Museum for the Trans-Atlantic Cable, it was in this building my Mother went to school.

Valentia lighthouse
Valentia Lighthouse

We went to visit the lighthouse, its in a spectacular location but be warned the road is very narrow and only for experienced drivers. The Tetrapod Footsteps is also very interesting, found in 1993 they date back 385 Million years, 200 Million before the dinosaur.

Fogher Cliffs Valentia
Fogher Cliffs & Geokaun Mountain drive.

A trip up to Geokaun Mountain and visit Fogher cliffs for the best views on Valentia, there is a charge but its well worth it.

O'Shea's pub Valentia Island, used for the Guinness Comercial

By Saint Brendan's Well you will also find this building used for a Guiness Comercial on TV. Be careful near the the Cliffs here as freak waves are actually common, so stay well back from the water.

Trans Atlantic cable valentia

Bray Head and Tower is a nice walk overlooking Puffin Island and the Skellig's. The Trans-Atlantic Cable was laid from this part of the Island in 1866 to Canada, there is a Monument here to mark this historic achievment.

There are many interesting Shops, Restaurants & Bars on Valentia, Water sports and even a trampoline in the sea for kids and adults to have fun. The whole family can have a great Day on Valentia, and I would highly recommend it for visitor and locals alike.
